Handball is a widely played and popular game in the world.
It is also termed as Borden ball, European handball, Olympic handball and team
handball. Records of handball like games go back to Medieval France. Today’s
team handball was codified at the end of nineteenth century in northern Europe;
primarily in Sweden, Germany, Norway and Denmark. Its modern rules were
developed in 1917 in Germany and then were improved in 1919. First
international match was played between Belgium and Germany in 1925. In 1946
International Handball Federation was established.
Modern handball is played indoors but outdoor handball is
also played and termed as beach handball and field handball. It is very quick
game played between two teams consisted of seven players each. Players pass the
ball to score a goal to opposite side court. Live score updates spectators about the goals scored by each team.
Each team is being divided between attackers and defenders. Body contact is
allowed only when defender and attacker are in front of each other.
Match consists of two half’s of 30 minutes and an interval
of 15 minutes. Handball court’s dimensions are 40 by 20 meters. This game is
based on few rules that are; a player can receive, possess, pass and shoot the
ball. During possession, he/she has to dribble the ball. Except goalkeeper no
one is allowed to touch the ground in six meter area near goal. There are two
referees in each match, one is goal line referee and other is court referee.
There are different ball dimensions for male and female categories too.
There are numerous countries registered in their respective
federations. There are five federations under International Handball
Federation, termed as African, Asian, Oceanic, European and American
federations. Handball has produced exceptional players including male and
females. IHF publish list of top handball players annually in both male and
female category. Daniel Narcisse is currently rated as top handball player of
the world.
